LS1 Swap FAQs

In a squarebore, the bores are closer to the same size, though, in some squarebore carbs, like cfm Holleys, the primaries may be noticeably smaller than the secondaries. However, even then the bores share the same centerline. Many aftermarket intakes, such as mine, and the Edelbrock Performer and RPM, etc, are “dual pattern” intakes the area where the carb bolts on looks like a butterfly. Either a squarebore OR spreadbore can be physically be mounted on them with no adaptors. Carter Thermoquads, Rochester Quadrajets, and Holley ‘s, ‘s, and ‘s are spreadbores. If the intakes are true squarebore intakes four individual holes or true spreadbore intakes again, four individual holes, though of different size , you cannot really bolt a squarebore carb on a spreadbore intake and vise versa. In the case of putting the squarebore on the spreadbore intake, the primary bores of a spreadbore, though small, are spread further out than the primaries of a squarebore. The squarebore primaries of the carb would not line up well with the holes in the manifold.

They accept Stromberg 3-bolt 97 type , Holley 3-bolt, Ford 94 style 3-bolt and Demon 98 carburetors. Made in the USA. Eddie Meyer was a Flathead Ford genius, and you can take advantage of his knowledge and experience with this dual-carb intake reproduced from original tooling. Holley products for GM’s popular LS engine are dominating the LS scene as well. Holley’s products also include performance fuel pumps, intake manifolds & engine dress–up products for street performance, race and marine applications.

One third of the valve cover extends over the intake casting, and the pushrods run through cast or machined passages in the manifold. The FE manifolds are comparatively wide and heavy, and have numerous machined surfaces that interface with the heads, block, distributor, valvetrain, and valve covers. With an original manufacturing and performance use history that extends over a year period, virtually every intake fashion and style has been produced for the FE, albeit in far fewer variations than for the more popular engines.

The builder can choose from original or aftermarket; single 4-barrel, dual-quad, three 2-barrels, six 2-barrels; tunnel rams or cross rams; single plane or dual plane; aluminum or iron. Depending on the desired cosmetics and performance any of these choices can be the right one for a given project. If you are interested in historical research the FE has a vast amount of outstanding racing history , there are other publications that better serve those needs. Jay Brown, a well-known FE enthusiast and racer, has done exhaustive dyno testing on literally dozens of FE intake manifolds.

This guide can help! If you know enough to be dangerous when tuning your carb, but not enough to get it right, you need to read this! You will need to know the basics about how to work on your Holley, and a book or two will really help a bunch, because of the pictures and part numbers in them. This guide goes farther than the commercially available books in that it helps you determine when your carb is rich and when it is lean.

This amount may be all you have to spend, depending on what tools and instruments you have in your garage right now. Some of the instrumentation can be borrowed from a friend.

Feb 24,  · I’m running two holley ‘s on a tunnel ram. my problem is there are no vacuum ports on the carbs or the manifold, so no place to hook a pcv to. can I drill and thread the intake? or does the fitting need to have pipe threads? where is the best place to tap the intake, assuming this can be done at all? and why oh why don’t these carbs have a vacuum port on them??

I had known for a long time Ford used PCV on industrial and delivery type flathead installations, but this was the first real info on hardware I have turned up. This was a normal installation much like OEM setups used on cars: Vac hose from below carbs to inline PCV which seems to be just like a normal modern one, except made to take apart and clean and then to the front of the intake just ahead of actual runners.

This would be easy on a stock manifold–most have a hole or at least a boss for a vac port into both runners. I think this tapping into both sides of the manifold is a good idea. Multicarb manifolds obviously will require some thought, and the underneath solution seems a good one. The Canadian wartime manifolds had a nice forward oil filling point because of deep engine compartments in Bren carriers and forward control trucks for the valley connection, but a simple tapped hole through the casting would do fine.

Reply I may the only person in the world that followed Holley’s suggestion to remove extra wires from 2 harnesses provided but now I find that I cannot go back. By that I mean originally I wired for a standard points system and since moved to a mag distributor and want the sniper to control timing. There is no information about color and placement that I can find. I have been on infinite hold trying to get the information and gave up.

And for good reason. Like its pushrod predecessor, the Coyote just works. This engine responds well to bolt-ons and forced induction, and the stock long-block can support power levels the old pushrod 5. Add a better rotating assembly and valvetrain, and the Coyote becomes a beast which is easily capable of four-digit power numbers and reliable performance. While drawing some inspiration from the mid-rise for the GM LS engines, these intakes were designed with functionality and aesthetics in mind while attempting to mimic OEM power bands without any losses.

Much like the 5. Performance parts selection runs the gamut with all the usual players involved. Aside from a custom-built manifold, however, no one has taken on producing a better manifold for the Coyote outside of the Blue Oval. Specializing in high-performance induction solutions for more than years, Holley shifted in the last decade from focusing on carburetors and those associated parts to more of a total performance company, including solutions for EFI.

The intakes are built using 3 mm thick aluminum with visible welds.

Many LS1 owners are faced with a few issues. There’s the oil pumps that randomly die, the rod bolts that randomly break, roller rockers that randomly lose their bearings, and the oil consumption issue that seems to haunt some and not others. The oil consumption issue seems to be one of the most common issues on all LS1’s out there, and this is due to the way the stock PCV Positive Crankcase Ventilation system is setup.

Nov 29,  · I have a Holley and was going to install it but have a few questions. I know the Double Pumper carb I have is not an emissions carb but a race only sort of thing but it has no hookup for a PCV and no hook up for the vacuum booster on the brakes.

I have been on infinite hold trying to get the information and gave up. So I decided to post on the forum thinking that they would chime in but instead I got the usual ‘call tech support’. Could you post a pic of both plugs showing color and location on the plugs.

Does this sound correct? I bought one for my Imperial and was very unsatisfied with it. Top end was great, but low end performance was horrid. I ended up having a correct carb rebuilt for the car and selling the Edelbrock on ebay. No No, you don’t want manual choke. Trust me, manual chokes stink.

Sep 02,  · The original Autolite A has a ridiculously huge 1/2″ port at the back from which the PCV is connected to, via a matching 1/2″ hose that connects directly to the PCV: On the other hand, the Holley has a 3/8″ connection at the passenger’s side for the purpose.

All of the major tuning aspects are found in the upper air horn casting, including the replaceable metering rods, and both the primary and secondary jets. The idle mixture screws are conventionally located in the baseplate. The center casting is the float bowl, and it is available in an aerospace composite phenolic material, reminiscent of the classic Carter Thermo-Quad carburetor, said to keep fuel temperatures about 20 degrees cooler than an all-metal carb, or the more typical aluminum construction.

Given the basic configuration and shape, as well as the availability of a composite center body, comparisons to the old Carter Thermo-Quad are obligatory. Like the TQ, the primary barrels feature triple venturi for a very amplified fuel signal—hastening response and improving efficiency. Like the TQ, the secondary side adds the biggest share of the airflow. Secondary airflow is controlled via an adjustable spring-loaded secondary air door, as pioneered by the Carter AVS and TQ carburetors.

I have had problems with oil being sucked right into the intake on my car after installing a good PCV system Well, first, -all- PCV systems suck in some oil. But it should not be enough to cause visible smoke. Have you done a leakdown test? Are you running a high-volume oil pump? It sounds like you’re trying to re-engineer the crankcase ventilation system, when the real problem is excessive blow-by, or your oiling system is packing too much oil up in the valve covers The valve covers are actually not the best place to put a PCV valve, they’re just usually the most convenient.

And most aftermarket valve cover baffles leave much to be desired. Better than nothing, but they seldom exercise the same care in design and construction as the OEMs do. There’s a -lot- of oil splash going on in there. Especially if you’re using a high-volume oil pump The back of the intake manifold is actually a much better place, and is where the factories often used to place the separator can for their road-draft setups.

My page on installing a Borg-Warner T5 in a 1st generation Z. Nissan called the ‘ trans a “wide ratio” while the ‘ was called a “close ratio” 5-speed. It also has a much taller 5th for cruising. According to a friend who rebuilds transmissions the early 5-speed is a 4-speed with 5th and reverse sharing the same fork. He said it’s more common for people to “blow” 5th gear on the earlier style as the fork is weaker.

He stated the later 5-speed is a stouter, genuine 5-speed.
